I am very excited to welcome Emma Michaels! She is not only a fellow blogger, but also a debut YA author! Her first novel, The Thirteenth Chime, came out on the tenth! (A little surprise from the publishers!)
Anyways.
What gave you the plot idea for The Thirteenth Chime?
A) There was a huge storm one night on the island where I live and it knocked out the power. We went next door to our neighbors and we were sharing a few candles for light as the storm continued its battering of the world around us. Right at the moment when a flash of lightning struck just outside of the window I was at, the large grandfather clock in the house began to chime ten o'clock. The power of the storm and the eeriness of the house combined with the clock's chimes, the way it echoed through the house and made my heart jump. I unconsciously reached out for someone's hand, trying to find a bond as I faced the emotions within me. It was in this moment that "The Thirteenth Chime" was born. Anyways.
What gave you the plot idea for The Thirteenth Chime?
This is a bit random, but where did you get the characters names?
A) David was named because his name is very important within the book, but I can't tell you why yet! Sorry! As to Destiny, she was actually nameless for a bit. It was my fiance who at one point made a comment about how the girl seemed to be "David's destiny and yet she'll always be lost to him". It was then that I knew her name. There are other characters in the story and each one is named specifically for important reasons.
Out of all the genres you could have chosen to write, why YA?
I've heard a bit about a book tour. Any info you can tell us?
Did the your blogging affect the book an any way?
A) Yes, blogging is very important to me and I believe that it has really helped to get the word out to others. I also think it is the bloggers and the blog readers who will help to decide the future of YA books and hopefully also the future of The Thirteenth Chime. Is there a series planned?
Is this The Thirteenth Chime the type of book you normally write, or was it a unique kind of thing?
Have you written any un-published books before that? Did you try to get them published?
A) This is my first, although I do have others planned including another series in addition to "A Sense of Truth". It is my hope to bring them to potential fans soon.
How does it feel to have your book published?
A) I began submitting queries December of 2009. It took me almost six months before I realized that the agents I was submitting to were not even asking for a sample of my writing. It was then that I began querying publishers directly and I received promising responses almost immediately. I am very grateful to those who responded with encouragement and suggestions.
Thanks for letting me interview you!
Her debut novel, The Thirteenth Chime, is out on bookshelves!
No one knew of its existence until it was removed from the attic upstairs.
In a beautiful house that overlooks the sea, an antique clock has the power to change the course of their lives.
The power the clock resonates will not only force Destiny and ex-boyfriend David on a journey into the depths of one man's mind long dead, but into the mind of a man filled with hatred and bent on revenge.
With the only clues to the nature of the clock having disappeared into the sea, Destiny and David must retrace the steps the man had taken into the darkness, before they fall prey to the trap he had set in motion over half a century ago.
Hatred never dies.
