This was by far the most demented book I have ever read. Not bad demented, just... demented. But it was one of those demented books that you actually enjoy, besides that fact that it scared the crap out of you.
The best thing about this book was the characters. The development, the character arcs, everything. I have absolutely no complaints about them. They were perfect.
Kendall was a fascinating character. I've never read a book with a main character who has OCD. It was an interesting idea that could have easily gone wrong. But it didn't. It was well integrated into the story, not just a side story, and more importantly, it was entertaining without dominating the whole novel. Her struggles with OCD were something you don't read about in normal YA novels. Usually in YA, you see the issues like that through the eyes of an observer, not the actual one with the issue. And it was just a breath of fresh air to read it from the actual person with the difference.
The writing was just... amazing. The words just flew off the pages, forming the horrifying world of Cryer's Cross. The little touches like the hitching posts and the single restaurant made all the difference. They set the tone of the novel. I'm really glad that those little things weren't skipped over to get to the plot.
Definitely something to read if you are a fan of anything scary. I loved it!
